Impact of bioactive packaging systems based on EVOH films and essential oils in the control of aflatoxigenic fungi and aflatoxin production in maize.

2017

Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus are the most common fungal species associated with aflatoxin (AF) contamination of cereals, especially maize, and other agricultural commodities. AFB1, the most frequent and toxic metabolite, is a powerful hepatotoxic, teratogenic and mutagenic compound. Effective strategies to control these fungal species and AFs in food and feed are required. Active packaging film containing essential oils (EO) is one of the most innovative food packaging concepts. In this study, ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer films incorporating EO from Origanum vulgare (ORE), Cinnamomum zeylanicum (CIN) or their major active constituents, carvacrol (CAR) and cinnamaldehyde …

Electrical power production from low-grade waste heat using a thermally regenerative ethylenediamine battery

2017

Abstract Thermally regenerative ammonia-based batteries (TRABs) have been developed to harvest low-grade waste heat as electricity. To improve the power production and anodic coulombic efficiency, the use of ethylenediamine as an alternative ligand to ammonia was explored here. The power density of the ethylenediamine-based battery (TRENB) was 85 ± 3 W m−2-electrode area with 2 M ethylenediamine, and 119 ± 4 W m−2 with 3 M ethylenediamine. This power density was 68% higher than that of TRAB. The energy density was 478 Wh m−3-anolyte, which was ∼50% higher than that produced by TRAB. The anodic coulombic efficiency of the TRENB was 77 ± 2%, which was more than twice that obtained using ammon…

Propyl substituted 4-arylimino-1,2,3-trihydroacridylnickel complexes: Their synthesis, characterization and catalytic behavior toward ethylene

2015

Propyl substituted 4-arylimino-1,2,3-trihydroacridylnickel dihalide complexes were designed and prepared by metal-induced template reaction with NiCl2 center dot 6H(2)O or (DME)NiBr2. They were characterized by infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Single crystal X-ray crystallography of representative complex Ni3 revealed a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry around nickel. The catalytic activities of the title nickel complexes were negatively affected by propyl substituent on their backbone when comparing with the results by unsubstituted ones. With the activation of diethylaluminium chloride, all nickel complexes exhibited moderate activity (up to 5.10 x 10(5) g mol(-1)(Ni) h…

The density of crystals of poly(ethylene terephthalate), (PETP), Qc is checked by X-ray diffraction assuming a triclinic unit cell and the indices of reflections as found by Bunn. The following unit cell dimensions are found: a = 4,48A, b = 5,85A, c = 10,75 A, α = 99,5°, β = 118,4°, and γ = 111,2°. This gives the density Qc as 1,515g/cm3 which is about 4% higher than that reported by Bunn. Negligible differences in spacings for samples annealed at different temperatures (120°C–260°C) have been found. Only for an annealing temperature of 100°C the higher d-values lead to Qc = 1,484g/cm3. For undrawn PETP films annealed at 250°C the same value of Qc as for drawn PETP was obtained on the basis…

The effect of the comonomer on the copolymerization of ethylene with long chain α-olefins using Ziegler–Natta catalysts supported on MgCl2(THF)2

2000

Abstract The effect of the type of the comonomer (1-pentene, 1-hexene, 1-octene, 1-decene and 1-dodecene) on the copolymerization of ethylene with α-olefin over vanadium (VOCl3 and VCl4) and titanium (TiCl4) catalysts supported on MgCl2(THF)2 and activated by Et2AlCl was studied. The results show that the introduction of a longer α-olefin in the ethylene polymerization feed depresses the catalytic activity of all investigated catalysts. The catalyst activity does not depend on the type of the comonomer applied but changes with the comonomer concentration in the feed. The incorporation of α-olefin in the polymer chain was found to be dependent on the type and concentration of the comonomer i…

Polymerization of ethylene by oxide-supported titanium halide catalyst: kinetic model with a deactivation of active species

2000

Abstract The effect of the calcination temperature of alumina, which was then used as a support for a titanium halide catalyst [TiCl4/Et2AlCl], on the catalyst activity in ethylene polymerization was investigated. α-Al2O3 was found to make a more advantageous catalyst support as compared to γ-Al2O3 despite the fact that the former offered a clearly lower specific surface area and its content of surface OH groups was inferior. The ethylene polymerization in the presence of the catalytic system on different alumina supports was investigated on the basis of a proposed kinetic model, taking into consideration the deactivation of active sites in the process. The improved activity was found to re…

Incorporation of nisin in poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) films by melt processing: a study on the antimicrobial properties

2011

Both industry and academia have shown a growing interest in materials with antimicrobial properties suitable for food packaging applications. In this study, we prepared and characterized thin films of ethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer with antimicrobial properties. The films were prepared with a film blowing process by incorporating a nisin preparation as an antimicrobial agent in the melt. Two grades of EVA containing 14 and 28% (wt/wt) vinyl acetate (EVA 14 and EVA 28, respectively) and two commercial formulations of nisin with different nominal activities were used. The effect of the nisin concentration also was evaluated. The films with the highest antimicrobial activity were th…
